cycle-tour (± 53.7km long) brings you by the mills and the beautiful scenery in the
Zaan-region. Have
fun/Enjoy yourself. Zaaninfo.com. TR=
Turn Right; TL=Turn Left; SA=Straight Ahead; P nr =Signpost It
is possible to rent a bike at stabling Fietspoint Pieters. When
you leave this stabling, you go TR towards the “provinciale weg”.
Before the traffic lights you go TR (cycle-track). First road TR.
You underpass the railway. When
you leave the tunnel, you go TR to the “Houtveltweg” (sign
bicycle in the direction of Westzanerdijk). Past the fire brigade, past
the filling station, you go TR (Aris van Broekweg). This road
changes into the “Westzanerdijk”. Along this road you see, at your
right at the level of nr. 280, the building of 5 Zaanse houses in
traditional Zaanse wood building by firm Somass. Just a bit further on
lays the Jewish graveyard. Keep
following this road. Past the smoked cheese factory of Schipper on your
left hand. (The cheese-store is open on Thursday/Friday from 09:00 till
18:00 and Saturday from 09:00 till 15:00) Then
over the sluice, the first road TR to the “Zuideinde”
(Westzaan). You
cycle through all of
Westzaan (J.J.Allanstraat)
where you can enjoy the beautiful houses and nature at your left and
right. Nearly opposite to
nr. 459/461 stands an old model ANWB signpost with the route to the mill When
you leave the mill, go on in the old direction. In
the center of Westzaan you almost drive against the Law-house. At the
left, in front of the Law-house, is hotel/restaurant “De Prins”. You
pass the Law-house at your left hand (church-neighborhood). You
follow this road till the “provinciale weg” (N515). You cross this
road and go directly TR to the cycle-track. You
cycle along the “provinciale weg” now. At the end, this road makes a
curve to the right. You go SA on to the “Guispad” and there
you see mill De
Schoolmeester at When
you have seen the mill, you go back to the “provincialeweg” and go TL
on to the “Guisweg”. Follow this road. At your right hand you see
mill De
Jonge Dirk.
In
the distance you can see mill Het
Prinsenhof. At
the end of this road you go TL. This
is still the “Guisweg”. When you underpass the speedway, you see the
Police Headquarters at the left side. At the entrance you go SA
to the Traffic Lights and there you go TR onto the “Dr. J.
Mulderstraat” (parallel to the “Guisweg”). Follow
this road , cross the railway, turn TL and directly turn TR again
at the traffic lights where you cross the “Provincialeweg” (N203). At
the other side you go slightly to the left into the “Parklaan”.
Follow the signs “Zaanse Schans”. At
the last T-Bifurcation TR. When
you cross the road at the crossing, you can see Mill De
Bleeke Dood already
at your left. Here you go SA onto the “Hoogstraat”. Follow
this road till the second street. Here you go TR (onto the “Stationsstraat”).
Close to the end of this street you go TL (see the sign Molen
Museum). Then the second street TL (“museumlaan”). A little
bit further on you see the mill Museum, which you can pay a visit. Openings
hours of the museum: From
June 1st till the end of September the museum is open on
Tuesday till Friday between 11:00 and 17:00, on Saturday between 14:00
and 17:00 and on Sunday between 13:00 and 17:00. From
October 1st till the end of May the museum is open on Tuesday
till Friday between 10:00-12:00 and between 13:00-17:00, on Saturday
between 14:00 and 17:00 and on Sunday between 13:00 and 17:00. When
you have visited the mill museum, you go TL and follow the
“Museumlaan” which continues in the “Pinkstraat”. You will
probably see mill “Het
Pink”
already. Ride
the “Pinkstraat” till the end, underpass the speedway and go TL
into the “Verzetsstraat”. At the T-Bifurcation you go TL onto the
“Lagedijk”/”Raadhuisstraat”. Keep following this street until
you see mill “De
Bleeke Dood”
again.
At
your right side you see mill “De
Ooievaar”
(you can only visit this mill at the Zaanse Mill Day, last Saturday of
September). Once
you are over the bridge you take the first road TL (“Kalveringsdijk”).
You are now at the Zaanse Schans. Keep
following this road and you will pass the following mills: Mustard
mill “De
Huisman”,
“De
Gekroonde Poelenburg”,
“De
Kat”,
“De
Zoeker”,
“De Os” and “De
Bonte Hen”.
(“De Kat” and “De Zoeker” you can visit) At
the end of this road you go TL (Enge Wormer) When
you have arrived in the 30 KM-zone (Wormerland) you go TL over
the little bridge and straight TR onto the cycle track. At
the end of this cycle track, it will change into the “Rigastraat”
and then the “Zaandammerstraat”. At
the end of this road you go TR into the “Dorpsstraat” (major
road!). Follow
this road. Halfway at the right side (nr. 350) you see the former town
hall of Wormer. In this town hall, dating from the 17th
century, they used to deal in goods and the village coat of arms, with the
picture of a spoonbill, still hangs above the door. A
couple of hundred meters further you pass the “Herenlaan”. A bit
further you see right across nr. 15 mill “De
Koker”
at your right hand standing in the meadow. You can walk towards the mill
to take a closer look. After
visiting the mill you continue the road in the old direction (“Oosteinde”)
towards “Jisp”. This
road makes a slight turn to the left and is called “Weiver” then. At
nr. 33 you can rent a little boat to check out the “Jisperveld”. Canoe-
and rowboat rental v/h Kwadijk. Tel.nr. 075-6421118. At
the end you go TR. Keep following this typical rustic road (after
± 200 m. you
see the old town hall of Jisp). After
a few kilometers there is a turn to the left towards “Spijkerboor”.
Go TL here (bicycle
sign). Hold
on to the right on this road (cycle track). Along
this cycle track you see a War-monument for 3 crashed bombers
from World War II. A
Halifax HR786- May 13th 1943 At
the end of this cycle track you go TR. You cycle along the
“Noord Hollandskanaal” now. Follow
this road and you will see the “Nekkermolen” after a few kilometers. Follow the old direction and go TR at the first
possibility. Follow
this road till you reach the bridge, cross the bridge TL and go
directly TR again (direction Zaanstad). You
leave “Neck” now and enter “Wormerveer”. Keep following this
road. This
is the “Noorderweg”. You can follow this road till the end. The road
makes a slight curve to the right and then to the left, along the water. At
the bridge you cross the bridge TR and go directly TL
again. Follow this road till the first curve and go TL here, onto
the cycle track.
This
road makes a curve to the right, here you go TL. You
will pass the Heerenhuis where you can eat or drink something. Keep
following this road. When you underpass the speedway you go the first
road TR and go TR once more time onto the cycle track,
direction Het Twiske (hold
on to these signs). At
you left hand you see nature-area Oostzanerveld. The
cycle track goes up. When you’re almost on top of the bridge you see
an info sign at the left about the Oostzanerveld. Below
again you go TL with a curve of 180 º. You
follow this cycle track till the cultivation of Oostzaan. You go SA
over a little bridge and cross the street (cycle track) in the direction
of Het Twiske/Landsmeer (at your right you see a small manege). At
the crossing (at your left you see an info-sign about “Het Twiske”)
you go TR towards the information center (P
Nr 25209) The
road makes a curve to the left a bit further on. In this curve you go TR
(P
Nr 25208). At
the end of this road, at the T-Bifurcation, you go TL (P
Nr 25207). At
the end of the cycle track you cross the street TR (P Nr
25206) and follow the “Blauwe Poort”. Pay
Attention !!! On this cycle track there might be dogs running free !!! At
P Nr 25205 you follow “Landsmeer”, at P Nr 25204 you keep
following “Landsmeer. You can see The “Twiske
Molen” already. You
can’t pay this mill a visit. And it is already the last mill. After
passing the mill you go SA towards “Den Ilp”. At the end of
the cycle track you cross the road and go directly TL onto the
cycle/scooter track. Follow
this cycle track. In the curve to the right you go TL and cross
the road (exit of “Het Twiske”). You
follow the cycle/scooter track, cross the bridge and at the traffic
lights you go TR. !!
Pay Attention. You
cycle on to the Italian “Ristorante Italiano” (in the summer also
ice available) and before this restaurant you go TL into the
“Kerkstraat. At
the end of this street you go TR (street “Poelenburg”). After
a couple of hundred meters you see at your right the Sultan Ahmet Mosque
(the biggest mosque of western Europe), which you can pay a visit. For a
guided tour it is best to call first (075-6354775). After
visiting the mosque you go TR onto the street “Poelenburg”. After
a couple of hundred meters you see an ANWB-sign with Center on it. This
is where you go TL and follow the direction to the center of
Zaandam (“Twiskeweg”). At
the end of this road you go TR (at the left there is a nice
children’s-farm). At
the first possibility you go TL and cross the street towards the
Rabobank. You
go SA over the parallel road, pass a crossing and go directly TL
onto the cycle track. Cross
the bridge and below you go TR. At
the traffic lights you go TL into de “Peperstraat”. Follow
this street, go over the bridge and you are in the center of Zaandam. The
road makes a curve to the right and then you take the first street TL.
(Vinkenstraat) At
the end of this street you go TL to the cycle track. At
the traffic lights you go TR and follow the cycle track. At
the next traffic lights you see the NS railway-station again and you are
