Mill “De Huisman” is probably built in 1786 as sniff-mill. Later on “De Huisman” was more over fit up for the manufacturing of mustard. It is an octagonal bovenkruier (windmill of which only the cap is movable) with scaffolding, but with a wingspread of only 11,40 meters. It is a little mill, which yet makes, there on top of the roof of the storage “De Haan” (The Cock), a clear contribution to the image of De Zaanse Schans.
Till about 1902 the mill made snuff. Mustard was grinded on small horizontal stones, where whey was added to, which was collected by boat from the self-cheese-making farmers in Westzaan and Assendelft. In 1912 the mill was turned into a sawmill. During World War II “De Huisman” generated electricity using wind force.

After several years of falling into decay this little mill moved to De Zaanse Schans in 1955.
